Furnace not igniting? Check the filter first. A severely clogged filter causes the high-limit safety switch to cut power to the burner — it's the most common reason a furnace starts blowing cold air.
Hear a clicking sound but no ignition? The igniter is likely failing or the flame sensor is dirty. Both are relatively inexpensive repairs — don't put them off, as the system will eventually fail to start at all.
If your heat pump is running but not heating well below 40°F, that's normal — heat pumps lose efficiency in very cold weather. If your electric bill is unusually high, the backup heat strips may be running constantly, which means the heat pump has a problem.
Keep the area around your furnace clear of flammable materials. Gas furnaces need combustion air — don't store boxes, paint cans, or cleaning supplies near the unit.

Common repairs like capacitors, igniters, and flame sensors typically run $150–$400 including parts and labor. Control boards and blower motors run higher — $400–$800 typically. We give you a clear estimate before any work begins, and we don't start repairs without your approval.
Is it safe to use my furnace if I smell something burning?
A brief burning smell when the heat first turns on in fall (dust burning off) is normal. A persistent burning smell, an electrical smell, or anything resembling plastic or rubber melting is not normal — shut the system off and call us. A burning smell from gas equipment should be treated as a potential gas leak.
