Pro Tips for Homeowners
Heat pump air feels different than furnace air — it runs at 90–95°F rather than 120°F+. That's normal and not a malfunction. If the air feels genuinely cold (under 85°F at the vent), there's a real problem.
A thin frost coating on the outdoor unit in cold weather is normal. The unit should defrost itself every 30–90 minutes. A solid block of ice that doesn't clear is not normal — call us.
When temperatures drop to 32°F and below, your heat pump's efficiency decreases. The backup heat strips will run more. This is normal — but if they're running constantly at mild temperatures (above 40°F), the heat pump has a problem.
Never set your heat pump to EMERGENCY HEAT for regular use. Emergency heat runs only on the expensive electric strips and can triple your heating bill. It's a backup, not an alternative.

FAQ
Common Questions
Why does my heat pump blow cool air in heating mode?
Heat pump supply air runs at 90–95°F — it feels cool compared to furnace air (120°F+), but it's still heating your home. That's normal. If the air temperature at the vent is genuinely cold (under 80°F), there's a problem — usually refrigerant, reversing valve, or defrost issue.
Is a heat pump right for this part of NC?
For most of Surry, Yadkin, and surrounding lowland counties, a heat pump is the most efficient choice year-round. Modern variable-speed heat pumps work efficiently down to the low 20s°F. For higher elevations in Ashe and Alleghany County, a dual-fuel system (heat pump + gas backup) handles our coldest nights better.
How often does a heat pump need maintenance?
Twice a year — spring before cooling season and fall before heating season. Each visit covers different components specific to the season. Our $199/year maintenance plan covers both visits, priority scheduling, and labor discounts.
My heat pump is always running — is that normal?
Variable-speed heat pumps are designed to run continuously at lower capacity rather than cycling on and off like older single-stage units. Continuous operation at low speed is more efficient and provides better dehumidification. However, if it's running at full capacity constantly without reaching temperature, that's a problem worth diagnosing.
What's the lifespan of a heat pump?
Well-maintained heat pumps typically last 12–15 years. The outdoor unit is the component under the most environmental stress. Units near the coast (salt air) tend to age faster. Annual maintenance significantly extends system life — the single best investment you can make in any heat pump.
Can a heat pump heat a home when it's 10°F outside?
Modern cold-climate heat pumps (Trane XV series and similar) can operate down to 0°F, though efficiency drops significantly below 20°F. For our service area, we typically recommend adding auxiliary electric heat strips or pairing with a gas backup (dual-fuel) for the coldest nights, particularly at higher elevations.
